Tragedy struck on northbound Interstate 805 near Kearny Mesa in San Diego, as a pedestrian lost their life in a fatal incident involving multiple vehicles, according to confirmation from California Highway Patrol to FOX 5. The incident unfolded around 5:13 a.m., just south of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, leading to the closure of all lanes in the area during Monday morning.

The pedestrian was struck by several vehicles and tragically succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Notably, the drivers of all involved vehicles responsibly stopped, and authorities are not treating the incident as a hit-and-run.

The circumstances surrounding why the pedestrian was on the freeway remain unclear, as there is no indication that they emerged from any nearby vehicle. Authorities have yet to determine the identity of the pedestrian. A SigAlert was issued, causing significant delays for the Monday morning commute as traffic was reduced to one lane near the shoulder of I-805 through Kearny Mesa.

Caltrans San Diego provided updates, indicating that the No. 4 lane was reopened just before 9 a.m., slightly alleviating traffic as the morning rush subsided. All lanes were fully reopened by 10:45 a.m. However, during the lane closures, vehicles were observed backed up to Adams Avenue near North Park.

In the aftermath of the tragic incident, CHP Sgt. Robert Holtz issued a poignant reminder to motorists as the holiday travel season gains momentum. “I want to remind people during the Christmas season to drive slow, be careful, wear seat belts and continue to follow the traffic laws,” Holtz emphasized. “They are there for a reason — to keep people safe.”

As the investigation into the incident remains ongoing, there are no additional details available at this time. The community is left grappling with the somber reality of the situation, highlighting the importance of caution and adherence to traffic safety measures during the festive season and beyond.
